Question by flatsfisher896: what are the pros and cons of the 6 liter and 7.3 liter diesel engine in ford super dutys? fuel economy?
Answer by rjm
I work for Ford Powertrain: Very proud of the Superduty.
We kick GM’s a–. Thanks for shopping Ford.
The 7.3L and the 6.0L are actually close in MPG.
You could expect to get 15-18 mpg in either.
Pro:It is a bigger engine with a different torque curve,
more grunt on the low end. A bit less complicated and easier to service. By the end of it’s run in production,
it was a decent motor. You benefit from a mature engine
from a quality standpoint.
Con : The 7.3L had to go, we could not meet federal emissions. Water pumps are it’s weakness. But service part has fix. Also cam / crank sensors. Same deal, addressed in service.Transmissions were so so.
6.0L PRO: More HP and torque. Although at a higher RPM.
6.0.L’s come with a new tourqueshift trans. The trans has a feature to use gears like engine braking, important for towing uphill when you want rpm, and downhill not to abuse the brakes. The 2005 models have integrated trailer brake controls. Smoking fast engine, you can race mustangs.
Cons: Advanced engine. More difficult to service. Early models had quality issues. (2003) But then again , so did GM’s duramax.
Both are decent engines, it’s more personal choice. Kinda like push rod engines vs. multi-valve.
