Question: What are some ways to save gas?

Question by : What are some ways to save gas?
I have a 06 Ford Focus, 30 highway mpg 28 mpg. I go to college in another county that is 31 miles away. Doesn’t seem that bad, huh? Well this a everyday drive, plus running arons, then going to see my fiance across the county I live in. I have to use super when I put gas in my car, being a 4 cylinder the engine knocks when I use unleaded gas. I don’t really run the a/c either, just to save gas. Any suggestions to ways to improve gas mileage.
*Errands, sorry for the misspelling. Also my car has been in a wreck before I owned it. It went under a semi and took off the hood and busted the windshield, however the engine remained intact. There are some computer issues like my air bag light will come on and off. Cruise control works but when the car has to accelerate it puts to much pressure on my engine (as if somebody stomped the gas). I can still use cruise control I just have to take it off when I go up a hill. It is a good little car, seat belts work great, air runs cold, has no problem with get up and go, brakes are fine. I just wanted tips on saving some gas when I drive. Thanks for the tips!

Cruise control if you have it, if not, feather the gas pedal, and press the gas pedal the least amount required to sustain a speed. Experiment with it. There is something wrong with your engine, as that motor should absolutely be able to use 87 octane. Get that checked out if I were you. Also, driving slower burns less fuel, but I would not advise going under the speed limit by much, as this is frustrating to other drivers, and takes too long to get anywhere.

There’s a whole subject out there and let me give you the google word: “hypermiling”. Check out what those guys do, learn their tricks, and you can get 20-30% improvement if you’re an average driver. You have to really focus on it until you get the hang of it, but it’s easy and fun.

You don’t have to do ALL the hypermiling tricks, just pick and choose, the key is to know what you’re doing. “actually knowing what you’re doing” is rare in America anymore.

Also, it pays to enrich your word power: “Errands”.

Tuning your car up is one of the tricks. A Ford Focus should use regular gas (they’re all unleaded, they got rid of lead before you were born). You shouldn’t need super. If you do, that indicates some sort of tune-up problem that is fixable. An ’06 is too new to have any serious engine-killing problems.

Keep your tires in correct compression and remove any unnecessary weight are two good tips.
