Change all your light bulbs to the fluorescent bulbs. Get high efficiency or energy star appliances. Make sure your windows and doors aren’t drafty. Turn of lights when you are not in the room. Unplug stuff that is not in use – many things still draw power even when off! Don’t set the thermostat to 68 in the summer and to 75 in the winter. Use an energy efficient thermostat – manually using a thermostat can actually increase your energy needs where maintaining the house at an acceptable level throughout the day is more efficient.

You don’t say whether you rent or own. If you’re a homeowner, a few initial investments will save money in the long run, and potentially increase the value of your home!

Suggestions for Renters and Homeowners alike: During the summer, a 5°F higher setting on your air conditioning thermostat will save about 10% on cooling costs. Reduce air conditioning costs by using fans, keeping windows and doors shut and closing shades during the day.

Other ideas: Unplug electronics, battery chargers and other equipment when not in use. Cut water use by installing faucet aerators, low-flow showerheads and low-flush toilets. Turn your water heater down to 120° or the “Normal” setting when home, and to the lowest setting when away. Water heating accounts for about 13% of home energy costs. Make sure your dryer’s outside vent is clear and clean the lint filter after every load.

If you’re a homeowner, conduct an energy audit an how much energy your home currently uses and to determine what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. Adding insulation and Installing storm or thermal windows and doors or double-paned glass is another relatively easy step.

I’ve made several changes in my home in the last several couple of years, line drying clothes, replacing a couple old appliances with energy star, adjusting my thermostat, but the biggest change I’ve seen in my utility bill was when I slayed the vampire electricity users. I plugged my tv, vcr, stereo and game system into a powerstrip that has switch when we are finished with the tv we flip the switch and everything stops sucking power. Between the 2 entertainment areas and unplugging all chargers when they aren’t charging I’ve saved about $ 50 a month.

I went from using over 60kwh per day down to about 42kwh compared to last year by making the changes I’ve mentioned. I’m still in the process of getting CFL’s into all light fixtures, because I’ll only replace a burned out bulb.
